This Ph.D. thesis is about the fabrication and optical characterization of so-called chiral metamaterials having the potential to manipulate the polarization state of light. We therefore start with a 2D periodic structure consisting of artificial atoms arranged in a square lattice with a lattice constant much smaller than the wavelength of light. Then we give each of those fundamental building blocks a certain twist into the third dimension. In choosing a proper design for the chiral atoms we are able to tune the optical response of the effective medium in a particular manner.
